Description
Columbus, OH
Columbus; Ohio had its start in the mid-1800’s as a hub for railroad lines carrying freight and passengers across the United States. The city is still home to several of its original railroad bridges like this CSX Scioto River Bridge that spans the Scioto River.
I’d originally planned to photograph the city skyline in the predawn hours from the center of this bridge. After setting up the tripod and camera in near total darkness however, a distant noise and vibration on the tracks I was standing on caused me to turn my head to discover a train heading across the bridge toward me. I quickly shifted the camera, took one photo and then hurried off the bridge. While my heart still beats fast every time I remember the experience, I’m delighted with how the photo conveys the drama of the moment and the beautiful colors of the weathered railroad ties and patina of the steel spikes.
