Set in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, Hocking County is home to a breathtaking tapestry of sandstone cliffs, gorges, waterfalls and rolling landscapes. Spanning over 420 square miles it is home to one of the most biologically diverse areas of flora and fauna in the Midwest and a diverse variety of trees including oak, hickory, maple, yellow poplar (tulip trees), beech and various types of pines. This photo highlights one of the newest nature preserves in the state titled Pip Ridge and protected by Arc of Appalachia, a non-orofit land trust that permanently protects over 14,000 acres of land throughout the state. This late-Fall photo was made in the early morning as sunlight streamed through the forest canopy and visible due to rising humidity from an overnight rain. [Photo: 0455]
