Petrified Forest National Park, AZ
Located only a short drive from the park entrance to Petrified Forest National Park, Pintado Point is a stunningly beautiful area filled with volcanic craters, mesas, prairies, badlands and vivid colors everywhere you look. While those features are beautiful to look at and photograph, another feature of this park is its totally dark sky at night. In this image I wanted to convey the stunning landscape and dramatic star filled nighttime sky as it looks both today and as it did to Native Americans centuries ago. This photograph captured at 3am reveals a portion of the Milky Way rising over the moon-lit rock formations from Pintado Point. [Photo 3283]
