Description
Cuyahoga County, OH
Earth Day was created in 1970 after an industrial waste released into the state’s Cuyahoga River for decades created a toxic waste dump causing a nationally publicized river fire. That fire along with a devastating oil spill earlier that year raised public awareness for protecting the environment and resulted in the creation of Earth Day in 1970. It also led to the cleanup and restoration of that river and soon after, establishment of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This photo titled “Nature’s Gift” was made in this same restored area and demonstrates the Earth’s power to heal. [Photo A-1241]
